Foundations for Student Success

Strong literacy solutions are built through consistent instruction, shared understanding and a community of educators that know how to put their research into practice.

Our literacy services are grounded in the Science of Reading and designed to meet your community where it is. Through professional development, coaching, and collaborative planning, we’ll help educators and district leaders align instruction, apply the South Dakota Literacy Framework, and create learning environments where every student can grow as a reader.

Literacy-Based Services

  •  Teaching literacy starts with understanding the research. Our Foundational Reading training covers the what, when, why, and how of the Big 5 components of reading: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension. We connect brain science to classroom practice, equipping educators with both the knowledge and the confidence to help every student discover their love for reading.

  • Explore the Reading Rope framework, reflect on their current practices, and walk away with a stronger foundation and the clarity to engage students in reading that’s based on scientific principles.

  • This is one of our most-requested trainings—for good reason. It’s proven to increase educator effectiveness and student achievement. Leaving educators with a specific set of tools and procedures to design engaging, structured learning experiences for their students, regardless of age. You can choose from a broad overview course, something more focused, or fully customized to fit your schedule and your goals as an educator.

  • Writing is a skill that can and should be explicitly taught. This training introduces educators to the science of writing, the five key components of strong writing instruction, and how to implement them in the classroom at any level from K through 12.

Bring Families Into the Literacy Journey

ELA-SD Grant Offerings

These offerings are designed to support ELA-SD grant implementation and alignment, and are available to every district. Whether you’re participating in the grant or pursuing literacy improvement on your own terms, these offerings help build instructional coherence and deepen understanding across your school community.

Developing a Literacy Leadership Team

These offerings help districts build a strong, collaborative group of leaders who can guide literacy efforts over time. This aligns goals with the SD Literacy Framework, monitors progress, supports educators, and creates a literacy system that sustains itself across the district.

Assessment and Data-Driven Decision Making

Giving good instruction begins with understanding where your students are coming from. With these teachings, we’ll help educators use assessment and classroom data to inform their teaching, monitor student progress, and identify where targeted support is needed. We also help districts evaluate the assessments they already have, determine what additional data would be useful, and make adjustments to help improve literacy outcomes.

Professional Learning (SOR)

Every teacher can be a literacy teacher. With Professional Learning, we’ll give educators a deep, practical understanding of how students learn to read and what the most effective instructional methods look like—from the elements of the Reading Rope to phonology, decoding, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Classroom Instruction (Structured Literacy and Explicit Instruction)

These offerings introduce the core principles of explicit and structured literacy instruction. Topics can include: critical content, lesson design, frequent student responses, monitoring learning, providing corrective feedback, and effective practice.

Tiered Instruction

Every student deserves access to the support they need. In these offerings, we’ll help educators understand how tiered instruction works and how to use data to identify skill gaps and target interventions. This ensures no student falls through the cracks and has a solid foundation of reading skills.

Writing Instruction

These offerings help educators build students’ writing skills by focusing on the research-based elements of the Writing Rope—including transcription, sentence construction, and composition—and on how to weave them into their daily instruction.

How We Deliver Literacy Services

01

Partnership & Needs Assessment

We’ll work with your district leaders to understand your current literacy practices, review data, and identify priorities. That way, everything we offer is grounded in your needs and aligned with the SD Literacy Framework.
02

Professional Learning & Coaching

Educators engage in research-based professional development rooted in the Science of Reading, systematic instruction, and data-informed decision-making. Coaching cycles and collaborative planning sessions help translate learning into lasting classroom practice.

03

Ongoing Implementation Support

Our team will continue to provide sustained support through follow-up sessions, classroom modeling, and feedback loops long after training day. This helps educators stay consistent and continue growing across grades and specific content areas.

04

Progress Monitoring & Reflection

Districts will receive guidance on using assessment data to track student outcomes and evaluate what’s working. This ongoing reflection process empowers leaders and teachers to make informed, strategic adjustments to their curriculum that keep literacy improvement moving forward.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Not at all. Our training is designed for all educators. Strong literacy instruction benefits every student, and every teacher can play a role in it.
  • No. Part of our support includes helping districts identify the assessments they already have, determine which additional data would be useful, and put those results to work to guide instruction and interventions.
  • No. Our training spans the full Reading Rope and is applicable across all grade levels. Covering both foundational skills and the comprehension and vocabulary development that older students need to keep growing.
  • Never. Our approach is customized to your district. It’s shaped by your current practices. Your staff’s knowledge. Your student data. So the support you receive is practical, relevant, and actionable.
  • Not exactly. Tiered instruction is about understanding the levels of support students need and using data to target specific skill gaps. Our training helps educators identify which students need intervention, what to focus on, and how to track progress effectively.
  • For districts in the ELA-SD grant, our services are fully aligned to grant requirements—including professional learning, assessment use, and systematic literacy instruction. For all other districts, we can still help build strong literacy systems and grow your teachers' capacity.
