Celebrating Malachi Nelson: A National Afterschool Leader Making a Difference in Rapid City

CFS Staff Member

We’re proud to share some exciting news from the world of out-of-school time (OST) programs: Malachi Nelson, 21st Century Site Coordinator with Community and Family Services (CFS), has been named one of the National AfterSchool Association’s (NAA) 2025 Next Generation of Afterschool Leaders.

This national recognition is more than just an award—it’s a celebration of what makes South Dakota’s afterschool programs strong: dedicated professionals like Malachi who show up every day with passion, persistence, and a deep commitment to the youth and families they serve.

Next Gen Nominations

Shaping the Future of Afterschool

Each year, the National AfterSchool Association selects a group of emerging leaders under 30 who are making an impact in the OST field. This year, over 100 nominations were submitted from across the country. Just 28 professionals were chosen—including Malachi.

The Next Generation of Afterschool Leaders award honors individuals who are not only growing as leaders themselves but are also helping others grow along the way. These honorees are recognized for their leadership in program quality, their influence beyond the walls of their own sites, and their active role in advancing the entire afterschool field.

According to Gina Warner, NAA’s Chief Executive Officer, “By supporting emerging leaders, we are supporting the workforce of the future.” And we couldn’t agree more. Leaders like Malachi are helping to build stronger programs, more confident youth, and more connected communities.

Malachi’s Work with CFS and the 21st Century Program

At CFS, Malachi supports one of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers in Rapid City—a program funded to provide engaging learning opportunities during out-of-school hours. Under Malachi’s leadership, the program has grown in energy, innovation, and impact. Families appreciate his welcoming presence, students thrive in a safe and supportive space, and local partners recognize him as a connector and collaborator.
Malachi represents what we strive for in our OST work: creating meaningful experiences that spark curiosity, build confidence, and help kids feel like they belong.

National Recognition, Local Impact

As part of this honor, Malachi will be recognized at the 2025 NAA Convention in Nashville this March and featured in the spring edition of AfterSchool Today, NAA’s national magazine for OST professionals. His story—and the stories of the other honorees—shine a light on what’s possible when we invest in the people who care for and support youth beyond the school day.

Afterschool professionals are often the quiet heroes in our education system, offering mentorship, enrichment, and consistency at times when students need it most. At CFS, we’re thrilled to see one of our own honored on a national stage—and we’re even more excited to continue supporting his leadership journey.
